Phonics and Spelling

Phonics and Spelling

In EYFS and Year 1 the children learn to spell using phonics, as well as learning key words that are common but don't often follow a simple spelling pattern (sometimes called tricky words or Common Exception Words). We use our own bespoke programme which is a combination of resources from Letters & Sounds, Jolly Phonics and our own bespoke content. We group phonemes, diagraphs, trigraphs and spellings into different phases (1 - 6). We adapt this scheme to suit our children's learning styles and aim to engage them and excite them during the teaching of phonics.

From Years 2 to 6 the children follow the No Nonsense Spelling scheme. In year 2 this crosses over with Phase 6 of Letters and Sounds and from years 3 - 6 it is a specific spelling scheme to teach children various key spelling patterns and rules.
