Year 5/6 - Sycamore

Sycamore Class

 Welcome to Year 5/6!

Term 2   Britain's Former Empire

This term we the establishment, expansion and ultimate decline of the largest empire the world has ever seen

The class will have opportunities to study not only the geographical extent of British imperialism, but also to evaluate the major reasons why Britain wanted and sought dominion over what grew to encompass a quarter of the world’s land area and its population.
We will consider the factors that contributed to the decline of the British Empire, particularly the rise of independence movements and campaigns for selfdetermination, such as those in India, especially after the Second World War. There is also an opportunity to assess the Commonwealth’s significance in the world today, which many former colonies joined after achieving independence from Britain.

PE days this term are Mondays and Fridays - please come to school in appropriate school PE kit.

Homework (Y6 only)

In preparation for the transition to secondary school, where they will need to be more self-sufficient and organised, the Y6 students have homework to complete beyond the school's expectation that they will read at home. It is set on Mondays and due in on Thursdays - there is no homework book, instead children need to develop the independence and organisational skills to make sure tasks are completed and brought to school on time. Homework will sometimes take the form of Mathletics tasks (if there are issues around accessing this at home please let me know and we can make other arrangements).
