Music

Intent

At Sherston Primary School, we believe that music is a vital part of every child’s education. Our intent is to inspire a love of music, nurture musical talent, and develop each child’s creativity and self-expression. Through a rich, progressive curriculum, we aim to provide pupils with the opportunity to develop their musical skills, including singing, composing, and performing, while also building their confidence, teamwork, and appreciation for a wide range of musical genres and cultures.

Implementation

Our music curriculum offers a structured approach to musical education, with a focus on singing as a core element. We provide regular opportunities for children to learn and explore music in a joyful and inclusive environment. Key components of our music programme include:

  • Singing: Children engage in singing regularly, learning a wide repertoire of songs that develop their vocal skills, musical understanding, and confidence in performance.
  • Musical Knowledge: Pupils are introduced to key musical concepts such as pitch, rhythm, tempo, and dynamics, and learn to apply these in their performances and compositions.
  • Composition and Performance: Children are encouraged to create their own music and perform both individually and as part of an ensemble, developing their creativity and sense of musical identity.

We provide a range of performance opportunities, from classroom settings to larger school and community events, fostering pride in achievement and a sense of belonging. The curriculum is designed to be inclusive and accessible, ensuring that all pupils, regardless of ability, can participate fully and experience success in music.

Impact

The impact of our music curriculum is seen in the confident, expressive, and collaborative musicians we nurture. Regular assessments demonstrate children’s growing musical skills, from their ability to sing in tune and play instruments to their understanding of musical concepts and genres. Children leave Sherston Primary School with a strong musical foundation, a love of music, and the ability to work creatively and collaboratively—skills that will support them in their future education and personal development.
