Intent

At Sherston Primary School, our intent is to provide a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to participate and excel in sport and physical activities. By recognising each learner’s unique relationship with movement, physical activity and sport, we aim to develop the physical competence, confidence, and knowledge necessary for each child to choose to lead healthy, active lifestyles. By fostering a love of physical activity, we encourage pupils to engage in regular exercise, teamwork, and competition, building their resilience, cooperation, and leadership skills.

Implementation

Our PE curriculum is carefully structured to offer a broad range of physical activities and sports, ensuring progression and inclusivity for all pupils. The curriculum is designed around key areas of physical literacy and personal development, including:

  • Physical Skills: Children develop their coordination, agility, and balance through a variety of activities, from gymnastics and dance to team sports and individual challenges.
  • Teamwork and Fair Play: Pupils engage in team-based activities, where they learn the value of cooperation, communication, and respect for others. We emphasize fair play and sportsmanship in all aspects of PE.
  • Healthy Lifestyles: Our curriculum promotes the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle, helping children understand the benefits of physical activity on their health and well-being.
  • Competition and Personal Best: We provide opportunities for both intra- and inter-school competitions, encouraging children to strive for personal improvement and enjoy the thrill of competitive sports.

The curriculum is delivered by knowledgeable teachers who ensure that lessons are engaging, inclusive, and appropriately challenging for all abilities. Through a focus on progression and regular assessment, we ensure that children are developing the skills they need to participate fully and confidently in physical activities.

Impact

The impact of our PE curriculum is seen in the physically active, confident, and resilient pupils we cultivate. Children make progress in a wide range of physical skills, developing competence in sports, as well as understanding the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Regular assessments show improvement in coordination, fitness, and teamwork, while participation in competitions and performances reflects growing self-confidence and enthusiasm for physical activity. Pupils leave Sherston Primary equipped with the skills, knowledge, and positive attitudes towards physical activity that will support them in leading healthy, active lives.
