Maths

Intent

At Sherston Primary School, we are dedicated to ensuring that all pupils develop a deep and lasting understanding of mathematics. Our aim is to foster confident, capable, and enthusiastic mathematicians who are well-prepared for their future education and everyday life. Through a mastery approach, we strive to build strong conceptual foundations, enabling all children to excel in problem-solving and mathematical reasoning, while cultivating a genuine enjoyment of maths.

Implementation

Our maths curriculum is designed to provide a structured, progressive learning experience that builds on prior knowledge and ensures depth of understanding. The curriculum is underpinned by:

  • Fluency: Pupils are given regular opportunities to practise core number facts and develop the rapid recall of essential mathematical knowledge.
  • Reasoning: Children are encouraged to explain their thought processes and reasoning, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of key mathematical concepts.
  • Problem-Solving: Pupils are challenged with a variety of real-world problems, which help them apply their knowledge in different contexts and develop resilience in tackling unfamiliar challenges.

Lessons are carefully sequenced to ensure small, manageable steps that support progression for all learners. We use practical resources, collaborative tasks, and ongoing assessments to meet the diverse needs of our pupils, ensuring that each child can succeed and progress in their mathematical journey.

Impact

The impact of our approach is evident in the confident, skilled, and motivated mathematicians we develop. Pupils make strong progress in understanding, fluency, and the application of mathematics, as demonstrated through regular assessments. Our focus on addressing gaps in knowledge and ensuring consistent progression means that all children leave Sherston Primary with a solid mathematical foundation. They are well-prepared to thrive in their continued education, with a mindset of perseverance and curiosity towards maths.
